In the neighborhood of Muswell Hill, in the Borough of Enfield, we designed a contemporary rear extension and single storey side extension. By incorporating timber cladding, wide slim frame sliding doors, and a unique pitcture frame window, this extension seamlessly blends tradition and modern design, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the property.
Situated in a conservation area, we were faced with the challenge of maintaining the Muswell Hill’s traditional character while meeting the homeowner’s expansion needs. The regulations mandated a side extension that resembled a garage, camouflaging it among the neighboring houses. On the other hand, the rear extension allowed for more design freedom, enabling a modern architectural approach.
At the back of the property, a timber-clad extension was created, providing a contemporary contrast to the existing structure. The use of timber cladding brings warmth, texture, and a natural aesthetic to the extension, complementing the surrounding greenery.
To seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, wide slim frame sliding doors were incorporated. These doors offer ample natural light, provide expansive views of the garden, and create an inviting atmosphere. Additionally, a carefully designed pitcture frame window serves as a focal point, adding visual interest while allowing abundant natural light to enter the interior.
By combining traditional elements in the side extension and contemporary features in the rear extension, this project achieves a harmonious balance. The traditional-looking side extension gracefully blends in with the neighboring houses, respecting the architectural heritage of the area. Simultaneously, the timber-clad rear extension adds a touch of modernity and sophistication, making a statement in its own right.
The timber-clad rear extension and traditional-looking side extension in Muswell Hill, Enfield, exemplify a successful fusion of tradition and modern design. By incorporating timber cladding, wide slim frame sliding doors, and a pitcture frame window, this project seamlessly integrates with the existing structure while enhancing functionality and visual appeal. It stands as a testament to the possibilities of architectural innovation within the constraints of a conservation area, offering a blueprint for future projects that seek to balance tradition and contemporary aesthetics.
