The project began with a rather common issue: a previous homeowner had added an extension to the house, but the design left much to be desired. The extension was cramped, dark, and lacked any connection to the garden. This was a space that felt like an afterthought, making it hardly usable and disconnected from the rest of the house.
Our team of architects and designers saw an opportunity to create something special, our vision for this project was to:
Open Up the Space: We decided to create an open-plan layout that would seamlessly blend the extension with the rest of the house. This would not only make the space feel larger but also encourage better flow between rooms.
Introduce Natural Light: To tackle the darkness that plagued the extension, we planned to incorporate large windows and bi-folding glass doors that would flood the space with natural light.
Utilise Unused Space: One particular challenge was the space beneath the staircase. We wanted to maximise its potential and decided to install a toilet under the stairs, making the most of every square foot.
Connect with the Garden: Finally, our goal was to create a sense of unity between the interior and the garden. We wanted to give the homeowners the opportunity to enjoy their outdoor space even when they were inside.
The transformation of this poorly designed extension into a light-filled, garden-connected space was a rewarding journey for both our team and the homeowners. By opening up the layout, introducing natural light, utilising under-utilised space, and enhancing the connection to the garden, we were able to turn a previously uninviting area into the heart of the home.
